NEEDS LIST FOR CASA BETHEL

Because of transportation issues and especially because of border crossing restrictions, we recommend money be raised for the following items so they may be purchased in Mexico (often at a lower price).

Water Treatment
The water at Casa Bethel is not drinkable, and in fact would not be considered touchable by U.S. standards. Drinking water has to be purchased each day by the young men at the orphanage. A water treatment system is needed so the children have drinkable water and can shower in water without dangerous levels of pesticides and bacteria. The cost of the water treatment system is $8,000.

Preparation for Winter
For winter, the children need the following items. Again, it is best if money is collected because we are limited to $50 in goods per person when we cross the border. Larry will take the caretakers and/or children shopping to get what they need. If people have these items, gently used, and want to donate them, we can work together to get them to the kids.
  • Hats and gloves (it can get bitter cold in the winter due to high winds)
  • Winter jackets
  • Wool blankets
  • Twin-size foam pads to sleep on (encased in plastic)
  • Sunk beds
Housing (Construction)
The orphanage has outgrown the current facility, and its plumbing and water systems are in the worst conditions you can imagine. Volunteers and the young people at the orphanage are building a new site (Ciudad de los Ninos [City of the Children]). Construction is very slow due to soil and weather conditions and limited tools. We very much need the following items:
  • Heavy duty concrete mixer, $4,000
  • 16 each of toilets ($250 each), showers ($200 each) and sinks ($150 each) for the new shower house
  • Drilling of the water well, $3,000
  • Two used pickup trucks and two 15-passenger vans (for construction, hauling drinking water and food, taking the kids to school, taking volunteers across the border to the work site/orphanage)
  • Block making machine, approx. $8,000
  • Windmills (to generate electricity)
Health Services
There is no government funding or services for these children. Doctors and teams to address the following are needed:
•  Dermatology exams and treatment
•  Eye exams and treatment
•  Dental exams and treatment
•  Hearing exams and treatment
•  Someone to organize medical records
•  A nurse training program
•  Nutrition and hygiene education
